Open Hand of Fredericksburg is a faith based 501(c)3 in the Greater Fredericksburg area that serves at-risk and under-resourced youth through vocational training, job placement, educational services, and mentoring. We are looking for energetic and goal-oriented interns to join our team as a TEACHERS ASSISTANT for our PEARLS program. PEARLS is a partnership with Planning District 16 local high schools’ alternative education programs. The PEARLS program teaches life skills building, work readiness, and career/college exploration. Together they serve students who have been suspended or removed from regular high school classes. We specifically focus on youth obtaining their GED, many of which have a record. Micah Ministries: Step Forward

Micah Ministries’ income development program, Step Forward, provides income-related services to individuals experiencing homelessness by assisting with the disability application process and/or offering employment and educational opportunities. This internship offers opportunities in direct service, program development, and collaboration with community partners. Mary Washington Healthcare Grief Support Services

Mary Washington Grief Support Services provides bereavement services to the Fredericksburg Area.  They offer more than 15 groups per month, provide comfort and care to anyone grieving the death of a loved one, and provide children and teenagers in the area with camps and support groups in the schools.  All of their services are free and open to the community regardless of how a loved one died. Programs are peer led, and volunteer facilitators receive the appropriate training, supervision, and ongoing support from qualified bereavement staff. Marine Mammal Specialist at the National Aquarium in Baltimore

The selected candidate is responsible for providing support to marine mammal care. This internship’s primary purpose is to learn about marine mammal care, conservation, research, and training. There is limited hands-on animal contact during the internship. Lighthouse Counseling

Lighthouse Counseling is an outpatient mental health and addictions treatment program for adults. Lighthouse offers individual and group therapy including basic psycho-educational substance abuse groups for persons mandated to treatment by programs such as the Rappahannock Area Alcohol Safety Action Program, employers and the court system. There is also a relapse prevention group for voluntary and mandated clients. Other treatment is provided individually. NOTE: Internship hours can be scheduled according to the intern’s availability; however, they must be available from 12pm-2pm on Tuesdays. Since 2003, Learning Enhancement Centers has helped more than 1,000 students strengthen their cognitive skills and thereby improve their grades, their confidence, and their success in all endeavors.  The Learning Specialists help people of all ages overcome learning challenges (including dyslexia, ADD, and auditory disorders) by developing underlying processing skills, processing speed, and executive function skills.  A variety of tools and techniques are used to target the causes of the learning difficulties.  Interns will have the opportunity to learn more about various learning disabilities as well as techniques implemented by the learning specialists. King George County Schools Counselor/Social Worker

King George County Schools Office of Student and Family Services (SFS) includes supervision of school health and well-being programs, including school nurses, counselors, and social workers. This internship experience will allow students to acquire direct, practical, and meaningful experiences under the supervision and through the support of experienced and skilled personnel serving in these positions. These experiences will take place in several schools across all levels (PK-12) as well as within the Office of Student and Family Services at the central office building in King George. Internship placements must be initiated by UMW’s internship coordinator, not the interested student. UMW will contact the Supervisor of Student and Family Services to begin the placement process. Kids’ Station Teaching Assistant

Kids’ Station is a child development center providing child care to employees of Mary Washington Hospital, the University of Mary Washington, and the community. The teaching assistant will help teachers with their classes of children aged 4-13 years old (though school-age children are only there before and after school). The assistant will plan and conduct class activities, read stories, and help children with specific skills like coloring, cutting with scissors, writing letters and numbers, letter sounds, and recognizing letters and numbers. Kenmore Club

Kenmore Club is a psychosocial rehabilitation program that supports adults with severe mental illness.  The program is open Monday through Friday from 8-4:30 with occasional weekend hours.  Activities at the clubhouse support individual recovery and promote community living by teaching coping, daily living, and social skills.  There are a wide variety of skill building groups including groups to enhance social skills, enhance workplace skills, and increase emotion management.
