Kids’ Station is a child development center providing child care to employees of Mary Washington Hospital, the University of Mary Washington, and the community. The teaching assistant will help teachers with their classes of children aged 4-13 years old (though school-age children are only there before and after school). The assistant will plan and conduct class activities, read stories, and help children with specific skills like coloring, cutting with scissors, writing letters and numbers, letter sounds, and recognizing letters and numbers. Kids’ Station is open Monday through Friday from 6am-7:30pm
Applicants must be fingerprinted, clear a background check through the agency, and produce a negative Tuberculosis (TB) test.
Duties
- Developing and implementing classroom activities
- Organizing games and other activities for PE
- Selecting and reading stories to classes
- Helping children develop their coloring and cutting skills
- Helping children recognize numbers and letters
- Helping children learn letter sounds
- Helping children write letters and numbers
Pre-Requisites
- Must meet all UMW and Department of Psychological Science internship requirements.
- Ability to pass a criminal background check
- Required courses:
- PSYC 231 – Infant and Child Development
- PSYC 253 – Fundamentals of Learning and Motivation
- Recommended course:
- PSYC 320 – Psychology of Exceptional Children and Youth
Assessment
- 42 hours of work per credit hour (most interns do 3 credits with 126 hours of work)
- Grade is based on on-campus supervision, agency evaluation, reflective journal, and a final paper
