Micah Ministries’ income development program, Step Forward, provides income-related services to individuals experiencing homelessness by assisting with the disability application process and/or offering employment and educational opportunities. This internship offers opportunities in direct service, program development, and collaboration with community partners.
Duties
- Complete a 20-hour online training course
- Interviewing Micah guests about their medical, psychiatric, legal, substance use, employment, and personal medical, psychiatric, legal, substance use, employment, and personal histories, completing a Medical Summary Report, submitting all Social Security paperwork, and acting as a liaison between the guest, Social Security, and Disability
Determination Services. - Â Work closely with the senior Supplemental Security Income/Social Security Disability Insurance (SSI/SSDI), Outreach, Access, and Recovery (SOAR) worker on submitting a SOAR case.
-  Work with a workforce development group and clients to empower Micah’s guests with barriers to employment. Interns will assist participants in developing work goals, identifying strengths and interests, interview role-plays, enhancing soft skills, and creating a “sales pitch” for their work skills to use with the job seeker.
Pre-Requisites
1. Must meet all UMW and Department of Psychological Science internship requirements.
2. Required courses:
- PSYC 211 – Psychopathology
- PSYC 232 – Adolescent and Emerging Adult Development or PSYC 233 – Adult Development
3. Recommended course:
- SOCG 155- Social Issues
Assessment
- Â 42 hours of work per credit hour (most interns do 3 credits with 126 hours of work)
- Â Grade is based on on-campus supervision, agency evaluation, reflective journal, and a final paper
