Marshall, Sarah

Name: Sarah (Marshall) Price

Year Graduated: 2008

First Job: Arlington County Public Schools- 7th Grade Math Teacher.

Favorite Course:

Foundations of Advanced Math was one of the most useful math classes because it prepared me for higher level math courses, teaching us analytical strategies and how to correctly write proofs. Of the higher classes, Topology was my favorite because Dr. Helmstutler made the class both exciting and challenging at the same time.

Memorable Experiences in the Classroom:

1) Playing with sphere’s and on Geometers Sketchpad in Non Euclidean Geometry. 2) Learning how to type up proofs on the computer so that it is nice and neatly organized. 3) Presenting proofs to the class on the board (after spending days figuring out how to do it, and then proving it for only 10 minutes). Math always seemed so easy once you figured out what to do!

Memorable Experiences Outside the Classroom:

Hanging out in the math department with Dr. Mellinger and Dr. Helmstutler, discussing both math and life. If you ever had a question or didn’t understand something taught in class, the math department professors were always willing to help. If you walk into the department, their doors are always open and welcoming, both math related and not!

Why Should Somebody Study Mathematics at UMW?

Good question! (just kidding). I studied both math and education at Mary Washington, and both helped me to become the teacher I am today. Although I am not teaching high level math, taking math at UMW taught me how challenging some math concepts can be for some of my students and techniques I can use to help them through it. The math program at UMW has some very challenging classes, but the professors are always willing to give extra help so that you can do well. I try to challenge my students in my classroom in the same way, and am always there to help if they struggle. I definitely recommend studying math at UMW for anyone who loves a good challenge, math, and great professors!
