Jon Stallings
Year Graduated: 2009
First Job: Full-time graduate student in Statistics at Virginia Tech
Favorite Course:
My two favorites were Discrete Mathematics and Real Analysis. Discrete was the first course I took where I had to think very abstractly about graphs and mathematical subjects unknown to me. Real Analysis was another favorite because Dr. Collier was very good at explaining complicated topics and could prove complex problems with a simple picture.
Memorable Experiences in the Classroom:
There are always great moments in the classroom. Some of my favorite professors were Dr. Mellinger, Dr. Collier, Dr. Hydorn, and Dr. Helmstutler.
Memorable Experiences Outside the Classroom:
Some of the fondest memories are from the parties we would have throughout the semester.
Why Should Somebody Study Mathematics at UMW?
Someone should become a mathematics major/minor for so many reasons. First, the faculty are great and very approachable. As long as you show that you are trying hard they are more than willing to accommodate questions. Also, the logical and critical thinking skills obtained from a mathematics degree are helpful for any future employment. Most employers would be very impressed with a mathematics degree as well.
