Preschool Education Specialist for Fredericksburg City Public Schools
The Preschool Education Specialist (PES) works with preschool children with special needs. The PES identifies children with developmental delays, works with these children and their parents at home or in a school-based setting, and serves as a liaison between the families and various professional agencies in the community.
Duties
Depending on the student’s background and the needs of the agency, the student may be involved in any of the following activities:
- Working with developmentally delayed children in the classroom
- Assessment of preschool children
- Developing individualized educational programs (IEPs)
- Developing and delivering intervention plans
- Home visits
- Committee meetings
- Record-keeping and research
- Working in the Head Start program
Pre-Requisites
- Must meet all UMW and Department of Psychological Science internship requirements.
- Required courses:
- PSYC 331 – Infant and Child Development
- PSYC 253 – Fundamentals of Learning and Motivation
- Recommended course:
- PSYC 320 – Psychology of Exceptional Children and Youth
Assessment
- 42 hours of work per credit hour (most interns do 3 credits with 126 hours of work)
- Grade is based on on-campus supervision, agency evaluation, reflective journal, and a final paper
