Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences

Keith Mellinger

Keith Mellinger began his term as Interim Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in the summer of 2017, after spending four years as the director of UMW’s Quality Enhancement Plan. In this role, Dean Mellinger serves as the chief academic officer of the College of Arts and Sciences, comprised of 20 departments and 200 full-time faculty members. He oversees all academic operations of the College in matters regarding the faculty and the curriculum, and he coordinates relationships between the College and the University’s Museums, Galleries, Orchestra, and several Centers.

Prior to his role as dean, Dr. Mellinger oversaw the development of UMW’s First-Year Seminar Program as part of the university’s re-accreditation efforts, focusing on faculty development, the management of the First-Year Experience, the creation of a series of online learning modules, and a robust assessment program. In addition, Dr. Mellinger served as chair of the Department of Mathematics for 6 years, and also as interim director of the Office of Academic & Career Services. As department chair, he oversaw a number of initiatives to increase student engagement in undergraduate research.

Dr. Mellinger earned his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Delaware in 2001. He is an expert in discrete mathematics with over 40 publications in professional journals. He has a number of awards to his credit including a national writing award from the Mathematical Association of America, a young alumni achievement award from Millersville University (his alma mater), and a research grant from the National Security Agency. In 2010, Dr. Mellinger was recognized with UMW’s Outstanding Young Faculty Award.
