Paragon Autism Services opened its doors in 2013 with the mission to support children diagnosed along the autism spectrum, their families, and the autism community. Since opening, Paragon has provided direct home-based one-on-one Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy to individuals with autism and related disorders (e.g., intellectual disabilities, cerebral palsy, oppositional defiant disorder) between the ages of 2 and 20. In addition to supporting the individual, Paragon provides diagnostic assessments, family support services, serves on community boards, and provides community outreach and education.
Position Title: Assessment and Community Outreach Intern
Immediate Supervisor: Assessment and Community Outreach Facilitator – Licensed Professional Counselor
Primary Responsibilities:
Assist the Assessment and Community Outreach Facilitator in completing assessment and outreach activities. Work locations will include our offices in Fredericksburg and travel within the greater Fredericksburg area.
Duties:
- Assist in the set up, implementation and summary of diagnostic assessments.
- Assist in the set up, implementation and summary of intake eligibility assessments (to determine eligibility for ABA Services).
- Assist in the set up, implementation and summary of skills assessments (ABA skills assessments to include Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills- Revised, Verbal Behavior Milestones and Placement Program, Vineland-3, Assessment of Functional Living Skills).
- Assist in the preparation and running of caregiver support groups.
- Assist in the preparation of and set up of community outreach activities (vendor fairs, community events, etc.).
- Assist in identifying providers and professionals for outreach activities/community building.
- Assist in the development of community support groups.
- Compile and/or update referral suggestions from pre-established criteria based on developmental/behavioral needs.
Agency Requirements:
- Availability of up to 9 hours per week during normal business hours (9-5 Monday-Friday) with flexibility based on community events.
- Personal transportation within Fredericksburg and the surrounding area.
- Clean Background Check (paid for by Paragon Autism Services).
- Complete HIPAA Training (provided by Paragon Autism Services).
- Complete Mandated Reporter Training (provided by Paragon Autism Services).
Prerequisites:
- Must meet all UMW and Department of Psychological Science internship requirements.
- Required courses:
- PSYC 231 – Infant and Child Development or PSYC 232 – Adolescent and Adult Development
- PSYC 253 – Fundamentals of Learning and Motivation
- Recommended courses:
- PSYC 211 – Psychopathology
- PSYC 320 – Psychology of Exceptional Children and Youth
- Ability to provide own reliable transportation for the greater Fredericksburg area and Prince William County.
