Fredericksburg Academy’s School Counselor is responsible for providing short-term counseling services to students and to develop proactive programming for various grade levels at the school (PK3 through grade 12). The school counselor works with teachers and school leadership to foster an inclusive school culture and to develop and maintain the positive social and emotional health of all students. The school counselor helps sustain Fredericksburg Academy’s inclusive, equitable, and diverse learning community.

As a School Counselor, we give basic Assessments, we conduct Observations, we perform Individual Counseling, and we run Group/ Classroom Lessons…So whether you are interested in School Counseling or Counseling Psychology, Developmental Psychology, or Teaching Psychology… this internship can give you the insight you need.
Duties
- Conduct student behavioral observations in various school settings
- Shadow the School Counselor in various school settings and situations (with parent and/or student approval)
- Facilitate under supervision or co-facilitate individual, small group, and classroom SEL lessons with students
- Work with School Counselor, Resource Teacher, and Nurse in a collaborative team approach for students
- Maintain confidentiality in all settings
Pre-Requisites
- Must meet all UMW and Department of Psychological Science internship requirements.
- Must have at least a 3.0 Cumulative GPA and a 3.0 major GPA
- Must get fingerprinted and receive background check clearance (paid for by Fredericksburg Academy)
Required courses:
- PSYC 315 – Foundations of Clinical Psychology
- PSYC 231 – Infant and Child Development or PSYC 232 – Adolescent and Adult Development
Recommended courses:
- PSYC 320 – Psychology of Exceptional Children and Youth
- PSYC 242 – Psychology of Personality
Assessment
- 42 hours of work per credit hour (most interns do 3 credits with 126 hours of work)
- Grade is based on on-campus supervision, agency evaluation, reflective journal, and a final paper
