Fredericksburg Academy’s School Counselor is responsible for providing short-term counseling services to students and to develop proactive programming for various grade levels at the school (PK3 through grade 12). The school counselor works with teachers and school leadership to foster an inclusive school culture and to develop and maintain the positive social and emotional health of all students. The School Counselor helps sustain Fredericksburg Academy’s inclusive, equitable, and diverse learning community.
Duties
- Conduct student behavioral observations in various school settings
- Shadow the School Counselor in various school settings and situations (where allowed given confidentiality issues)
- Attend Faculty Meetings, Divisional Meetings and Parent Meeting (with parent approval) and based on schedule/availability
- Facilitate under supervision or co-facilitate individual, small group, and classroom lessons with students
- Work with School Counselor, Resource Teacher ,and Nurse in a collaborative team approach for students in need/crisis
- Student case-study review and preparation
- Maintain confidentiality in all settings
- Note: All applicants must get fingerprinted and have a background check (paid for by Fredericksburg Academy)
Pre-Requisites
- Must meet all UMW and Department of Psychological Science internship requirements.
- Required courses:
- PSYC 315 – Foundations of Clinical Psychology
- PSYC 231 – Infant and Child Development or PSYC 232 – Adolescent and Adult Development
- Recommended courses:
- PSYC 320 – Psychology of Exceptional Children and Youth
- PSYC 242 – Psychology of Personality
Assessment
- 42 hours of work per credit hour (most interns do 3 credits with 126 hours of work)
- Grade is based on on-campus supervision, agency evaluation, reflective journal, and a final paper
