UMW’s Department of Psychological Science currently supports a placement with Empowerhouse, an agency that addresses the needs of victims of domestic violence, their dependent children, and their abusers. Services include advocacy and follow-up programs in addition to a safe house.
Duties:
- 24-hour hotline-crisis intervention, safety planning, information, and referral
- Individual advocacy
- Reports
- Record-keeping
- Support groups for survivors and children of survivors
- Educational groups for men and women charged with assault on their partners
- Weekly contact with campus supervisor
Assessment:
- 42 hours of work per credit hour (most interns do 3 credits with 126 hours of work)
- Grade is based on on-campus supervision, agency evaluation, reflective journal, and a final paper
Pre-Requisites:
- Must meet all UMW and Department of Psychological Science internship requirements.
- Required courses:
- PSYC 315 – Foundations of Clinical Psychology
- PSYC 201 – Social Psychology
- Recommended course:
- PSYC 350 – Psychology of Women
- SOCG 332 – Introduction to Social Welfare
