This internship is for a teaching assistant who will help teachers with their classes of children aged 2-6. The assistant may plan and conduct class activities, read stories, and help children with specific skills like coloring, cutting with scissors, writing letters and numbers, letter sounds, and recognizing letters and numbers. The assistant may also help with office activities (e.g. answering the phone, filing). The school is open Monday through Friday from 9am-2pm.
Duties:
Depending on the student’s background and the needs of the school, the student may be involved in any number of the following activities.
- Developing and implementing classroom activities.
- Listening to the children read aloud.
- Selecting and reading stories to classes.
- Helping children develop their coloring and cutting skills.
- Helping children recognize numbers and letters.
- Helping children learn letter sounds.
- Helping children write letters and numbers.
- Assisting with office needs (e.g. answering phones).
Pre-Requisites:
- Must meet all UMW and Department of Psychological Science internship requirements.
- Required courses:
- PSYC 231 – Developmental Psychology: The Infant and Child
- PSYC 253 – Fundamentals of Learning and Motivation
- Recommended courses:
- PSYC 320 – Psychology of Exceptional Children and Youth
Assessment:
- 42 hours of work per credit hour (most interns do 3 credits with 126 hours of work)
- Grade is based on on-campus supervision, agency evaluation, reflective journal, and a final paper
