Brain Injury Services – Community Day Program and Clubhouse Program

Brain Injury Services assists survivors of brain injury, which includes all acquired brain injuries to live as independently as possible by providing them the skills and confidence they need to lead a fulfilling and productive life. The group program provides a hybrid of virtual and in person service opportunities with the following: health/wellnessworkshops, independent living skill sessions, Recreational & peer support activities, and vocational/volunteer tasks in the community.

Duties:

  • Co-facilitate task based community volunteer projects
  • Design and implement a cognitive skills workshop
  • Co-facilitate wellness related educational activities
  • Co-facilitate and plan Culinary and Productive Activity Workshops
  • Assist in monthly program activity planning and implementation
  • Assist with Individual Service Plans

Prerequisites

  1. Must meet all UMW and Department of Psychological Science internship requirements.
  2. Required courses:
    • PSYC 305 – Cognitive Neuroscience
    • PSYC 315 – Foundations of Clinical Psychology
  3. Recommended courses:
    1. PSYC 232 – Adolescent and Emerging Adult Development
    2. PSYC 233 – Adult development
    3. PSYC 339 – Health Psychology
    4. PSYC 320 – Psychology of Exceptional Children and Youth
  • Complete 25 hours of Brain Injury Education provided through this organization

Assessment:

  • 42 hours of work per credit hour (most interns do 3 credits with 126 hours of work)
  • Grade is based on on-campus supervision, agency evaluation, reflective journal, and a final paper

 

Application

  • The student has to complete an internship application at Brain Injury Services for
    Fredericksburg Program (Fredericksburg Day Program) or ADAPT Clubhouse
    Program (Alexandria)
  • The student will complete all necessarily paperwork to complete a background
    check
  • The student will also sign a confidentiality form and any other paperwork
    provided by the onsite supervisor
