As the world works to conquer COVID-19, the virus complicates work like ours—work that demands close proximity, exuberant vocal expression, and high touch processes. Not surprisingly, UMW Theatre will not produce a season of plays and musicals this year. We, instead, are focusing on our classroom and studio instruction as our faculty and staff devote themselves to creating rich, engaging, and challenging learning experiences for our students.

We have empowered our student-led Studio 115 Committee to program projects—readings, plays, showcases—in the digital realm during the 2020-21 academic year. We are using this opportunity to support these students as they strengthen their skills in producing theatre. Not only will our students continue to develop themselves as young theatre artists, they will finish the year with strong skills in planning, collaboration, and leadership.

We will return, stronger than ever. In the meantime, we remain committed to our students—their learning, their growth, and their future.

Welcome to the Department of Theatre and Dance, home of UMW Theatre

Ours is a strong community of theatre practitioners—faculty, staff, and students—who create plays and musicals that encourage conversations with our audience. Through classes, rehearsals, work calls, meetings, practical experiences, and strong faculty mentoring, our students graduate from UMW as emerging theatre professionals fully prepared to pursue a career in the professional theatre.

We believe that the strongest way to learn theatre is to make theatre; production is at the center of everything we do. Students have unlimited opportunities to learn and grow in our classrooms and studios while pursuing opportunities in Klein Theatre and Studio 115 (our student-managed black box theatre).

Our alumni work in the theatre and related industries throughout the world. There is no question that a theatre major at the University of Mary Washington, coupled with the extraordinary opportunities available to our students, have launched our graduates into successful careers.
