Art Therapy Program at Mary Washington Hospice

Mary Washington Hospice is an organization that focuses on the palliation of the terminally ill and their families. The art therapy program specifically uses the therapeutic power of the creative process but also focuses on the idea that art can be a means of communication.

Duties:

  1. Shadowing the art therapist during individual and group art therapy sessions with hospice patients, their loved ones, and those who have experienced the death of a loved one.
  2. Preparing and organizing materials used for art therapy sessions and groups.
  3. Assisting in the provision of in-services to hospice staff.
  4. Gaining an understanding of the varying aspects of the hospice team.

Pre-Requisites:

  1. Must meet all UMW and Department of Psychological Science internship requirements.
  2. At least 6 credits of Studio Art courses
  3. Required courses:
    • PSYC 211 – Psychopathology
    • PSYC 233 – Psychology of Aging
  4. Recommended courses:
    1. PSYC 315- Foundations of Clinical Psychology

Assessment:

  • 42 hours of work per credit hour (most interns do 3 credits with 126 hours of work)
  • Grade is based on on-campus supervision, agency evaluation, reflective journal, and a final paper
