Fredericksburg Academy – Lower School Learning Resource Center

Fredericksburg Academy works with students who may need extra support in any academic area. Our Resource Team partners with faculty to provide students with the opportunity to discover who they are in a nurturing, safe environment while becoming independent learners.  The Learning Resource Center provides opportunities for students in PK through grade 5 to learn in individual sessions or small group meetings. Fredericksburg Academy’s LS Learning Resource Center supports the Science of Reading/Structured Literacy approach for all language arts instruction (Fountas and Pinnell will not be used). 

Duties 

  • Provide a structured environment when working with a small group and execute behavior management so to maximize instructional time 
  • Support preschool age children with a variety of needs such as fine motor skills, alphabet recognition, forming letters, pencil grip, emotional support etc. 
  • Support students who need small group or one on one assistance in math, specifically in grades 4-5 
  • Support students who need testing accommodations given (quiet testing space, read aloud, scribe) 
  • Read to or be read to by struggling readers 
  • Work with students who have identified disabilities such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, or dyscalculia and understand that knowledge of this information is confidential 
  • Maintain open communication with the resource teachers and other faculty members  
  • Observe classroom instruction to get a better understanding of the students as they engage with the teacher and the curriculum 
  • Attend a child study meeting should the need arise 
  • Maintain flexibility as schedules and needs can change at a moment’s notice 
  • Note: All applicants must get fingerprinted and have a background check (paid for by Fredericksburg Academy) 

Pre-Requisites 

  1. Must meet all UMW and Department of Psychological Science internship requirements.

  • PSYC 231 – Infant and Child Development
  • PSYC 253 – Fundamentals of Learning and Motivation 
  1. Recommended courses: 
  • PSYC 320 – Psychology of Exceptional Children and Youth
