Big Brothers Big Sisters helps children aged 6-18 reach their potential through one-to-one relationships with adult mentors that have a measurable impact on youth.
Duties:
- Complete agency training
- Assist with recruiting, orienting, and interviewing prospective volunteers
- Observe parent and child interviews
- Observe matching children with volunteers based on mutual interests and special needs
- Plan and implement various activities for the mentors and their matches
- Assist in the supervision of mentors and their matches at various school locations
- Assist with the planning and implementation of fundraising events
Pre-Requisites:
- Must meet all UMW and Department of Psychological Science internship requirements.
- Required courses:
- PSYC 201- Social Psychology
- PSYC 231 – Infant and Child Development or PSYC 232 – Adolescent and Emerging Adult Development
- Recommended courses:

- SOCG 332- Introduction to Social Welfare
Assessment:
- 42 hours of work per credit hour (most interns do 3 credits with 126 hours of work)
- Grade is based on on-campus supervision, agency evaluation, reflective journal, and a final paper
