In honor of Black History Month, the Departments of History and American Studies and the Program in Women’s and Gender Studies present Dr. Donna Murch (Associate Professor of History, Rutgers University), who will offer a talk entitled “A Time Before Crack: The Destruction of the Southern California Black Panther Party and the Transformation of Black Youth Culture in Late 20th Century Los Angeles.”

Thursday, February 21: Black History Month Lecture, The Slaves’ Gamble: Choosing Sides in the War of 1812 by Gene Allan Smith

Dr. Gene Allen Smith, professor of history and director of the Center for Texas Studies at Texas Christian University will discuss his most recent book,The Slaves’ Gamble:  Choosing Sides in the War of 1812. The book explores the history-changing decisions made by the African – American combatants of the crucial conflict, and how the opportunity to fight changed the course of slavery in America.

University of Mary Washington history professor Jeffrey McClurken talks about the Civil War leading up to December 1862. He discusses the political situations in the North and South, and traces changes in the Union and Confederate commands to that point in the war. Using the words of politicians, military officers, journalists, and people living in and around Fredericksburg, Virginia during that period, Professor McClurken sets the stage for the Battle of Fredericksburg, which was fought from December 11th to the 13th, 1862.

Talk: German Unification through U.S. Eyes (Monday, 9/17)

Neal Walsh, former press-attache at the U.S. Embassy in Bonn, Germany, will present a talk on “German Unification through U.S. Eyes” on Monday, 9/17. Serving as press attache between 1988-1990, Neal Walsh witnessed first-hand the talks behind closed doors between the U.S., the Soviet Union, France, East and West Germany.

The talk will be held in Combs 139, at 6 pm and is open to all.

On Thursday, September 27th, Amy Leonard will present a talk entitled “Under Attack: Religious Women and the Reformation.” The talk will begin at 7 pm, in Monroe 211.
