American Studies allows students to develop a core set of skills in a liberal-arts setting.
Here is a list of skills that American Studies majors develop over the course of their academic career at the University of Mary Washington:

- Incorporate aspects of race/ethnicity and gender/sexuality in the explication of American life.
- Understand the relationship between the present and future with the past.
- Integrate knowledge from several disciplinary perspectives.
- Read and assess primary and secondary sources from a variety of genres and mediums.
- Synthesize independent research findings in a written format.
- Utilize technological resources in research, data analysis, and presentation.
- Communicate evidence and analysis orally.
