UMW IRO Attends UNCMUNC at the University of North Carolina
The UMW International Relations Organization (IRO) is a student club dedicated to the subject of international relations and current events. In addition to fostering a passion for international affairs in its weekly discussions, the IRO also includes the UMW Model UN team. In November 2021, UMW’s International Relations Organization took a team of 16 student delegates on a trip to the University of North Carolina Model United Nations Conference. The conference costs of the student delegates were sponsored in part by the UMW Political Science and International Affairs department.
While the team has often traveled for MUN conferences across the country, Liam Kiely, the current president of the IRO noted that the group of students who traveled to the November 2021 conference in North Carolina was the “largest group of delegates that UMW has ever taken to a Model UN conference.” At the conference, UMW students engaged with other MUN representatives from around the country on debate topics ranging from coups in Bavaria to the resurgence of the Soviet Union.
“All 16 delegates did a fantastic job representing their respective individuals and countries,” said Kiely. Ricky Munoz, the vice president of the IRO, won the award of Outstanding Delegate in his role as Mateusz Morawiecki, Prime Minister of Poland in the committee ‘Europe in Crisis.’
Following this remarkable performance at the North Carolina conference, the IRO is currently planning on attending VICS, the University of Virginia’s Model United Nations conference, in March of 2022. They are hoping to see more delegates from the UMW community join in to send the biggest party yet to represent the university at the upcoming conference.
The International Relations Organization meets weekly and hosts Saturday Simulation events for simulated debates. For more information on the organization, check out their page on UMW Presence, or their twitter page (@UMWIRO).
