Student Opportunities

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology looks for student participation in all aspects of its work as student aides or student representatives to the department.

STUDENT AIDES

Each year the department employs four or five students to work as departmental aides. Aides do not need to be majors in the department; any interested student is welcome to apply. Student aides perform a variety of clerical and office tasks under the supervision of Ms. Amanda Rutstein, Office Manager for the Department, and members of the faculty. Applicants should have word-processing skills and ideally be familiar with MS Word and Excel. Aides usually work between five and seven hours a week, depending on funding. To apply as a student aide for the coming academic year, please visit https://careers.umw.edu/ or contact Dr. Kristin Marsh, Department Chair (kmarsh@umw.edu), or Ms. Amanda Rutstein, Office Manager (aruts9tm@umw.edu).

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES

Majors elect students as department representatives, three from sociology and two from anthropology, to represent student concerns to the department faculty and to the Academic Affairs Council of Student Government. Representatives attend Department meetings and meetings of the Academic Affairs Council. The representatives may organize other department activities throughout the year as well. Students hold elections for representatives in April. If you would like to run for office, please contact a faculty member. If there are concerns you would like to see addressed, be sure to contact the current student representatives.
