Bill Hanson Memorial Scholarship

The Bill Hanson Memorial Scholarship commemorates the life of Dr. Bill Hanson, who taught in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology for more than twenty years. Deeply committed to social activism until his death in 2005, Bill had a profound effect on students, the sociology program, the university, and the larger Fredericksburg community.

One scholarship is awarded in his honor each year to a deserving student. The award is based on merit, financial need, and commitment to peace and social justice.

Students interested in applying for consideration for the award should contact the department chair, Dr. Eric Gable.

Donations to the scholarship are most welcome. Contributions should be designated for the “Bill Hanson Scholarship” and sent to the UMW Foundation, Jepson Alumni Executive Center, 1119 Hanover Street, Fredericksburg, Virginia 22401.
