Note: This is not a GIS capstone internship at this time; possibly it could be one in the future.
Project duration is anticipated to be spring semester 2023, with an opportunity to continue.
Project location:
- UMW campus, Framar Hall, Monroe Hall.
- The intern will meet with the locksmiths in Framar, will use a UMW laptop with dedicated software, and will be assigned an office/computer in Monroe Hall.
- Data collection might occur anywhere on campus.
Project Goals
- The UMW Locksmiths use a geodatabase called Simple K to manage access data across campus. It is not exactly a geographic information system, but has many similarities. They need some help entering new data, and cleaning up existing data.
- Some new data collection is also needed; this will be done by GPS into a GIS (e.g., locations and attributes of gates, emergency phones, access control panels, ADA signs)
Role of Intern
- An intern with some GIS background will be valuable for data management, clean up, and collection
- Depending on the time available, the intern may focus on one or two buildings so that Simple K is thoroughly updated for those areas
- Depending on student interest, floor plans and access points could be mapped in a GIS, exploring how GIS compares and contrasts with this different dedicated geodatabase

- Please apply by 5pm Thursday, 1/12/23, if you want to earn academic internship credit for this experience. The amount of credit depends on how much time you have available to spend on the internship: 1 credit = 45 hours for the semester; 3 credits = 135 hours for the semester.
