Banquet is Back!
Pre-covid, the Department of Geography held an annual Spring Awards Banquet: the last one was in 2019, which was also the 60th anniversary of the department being founded – there is a slide deck at the bottom of this page: see who you recognize! For 2023, we are back – and we hope you can attend!
Please email Dr. Dawn Bowen for information on how to pay ($15) with Zelle, PayPal or Venmo.
Wednesday, April 12, 6:00 pm
Upstairs River-view Room at Brock’s Riverside Grill
503 Sophia St, Fredericksburg, VA 22401
Dress is business casual – feel free to dress up!
At this event, we recognize outstanding Geography and GIS Certificate students and hold an initiation ceremony for Gamma Theta Upsilon, the Geography honor society. We might also initiate students to the Urban Studies Society too! This event is for everyone, not only seniors! All Geography majors, related minors, students in the GIS Certificate, and MSGA students are invited at the reduced cost of $15. Guests and faculty pay $45. If you graduated in 2022 and you’d like to come, you too may pay the $15 rate!
The evening starts with games, which are completed while people are arriving. We usually have three games – for which there are three gift-card prizes:
“Where in the World” matching a photograph with a city or other location
“Geographer Professors’ favorite book/movie/band/film, etc.”
Some other geographic-matching-location game, depending on our mood and imagination!!
There is a cash bar.
Diners sit at one of several tables. Each has the name of a professor – so you can choose to sit with your favorite professor if you wish! Definitely sit with your friends.
The banquet itself is buffet style, with several protein options including a vegetarian dish.
After the banquet, we work out the game winners. Dr. Dawn Bowen then inducts new members into Delta Mu, our chapter of Gamma Theta Upsilon, the geography honor society. She then awards cords for graduating members of the society. And finally, student awards are presented. Read about our awards, and past winners, here. Below is a slide show from the 2019 event.
