Marie McAllister

Marie E. McAllister writes on eighteenth-century literature and on the intersections between literature and medicine. Much of her scholarly work considers how literature depicts the taboo. She has published an extended series of articles on venereal disease and addiction in literature. Other interests include how early women writers used travel as a tactic for discussing broader social issues usually off limits to women. A 2016-2018 Waple Professor of English, Dr. McAllister frequently teaches Writing About Medicine, eighteenth-century literature courses, and Jane Austen.
