Mara Scanlon
Mara Scanlon’s focal period in both research and teaching begins with Whitman and Dickinson in the nineteenth century, centers on various types of Modernist writing, and reaches into Contemporary poetry and poetics. Other specific interests include the digital humanities, ethics and literature, periodical studies, and women’s, gender, and sexuality studies. Throughout her work, Dr. Scanlon is driven by questions like this: How does literature embody, express, or challenge our ways of seeing and being in the world, and how do we ethically respond to the selves and others we find there? Her most frequently taught courses in the major include Modern Poetry, Contemporary Poetry, Literature of the Great War, and Women and Modernism; frequently offered general education courses include Global Issues in Literature and Writing about the Moon.
Dr. Scanlon was the recipient of UMW’s Grellet C. Simpson Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching in 2014 and was the inaugural winner of the Donald Glover Award for Excellence in Teaching in English, 2021-2023. She is a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
