Research & Creativity Day 2020

April 24, 2020 would have been the 14th annual Research and Creativity Day symposium at the University of Mary Washington. As in years past, the Hurley Convergence Center would have been filled with posters and hosted simultaneous oral sessions. There would have been multiple exhibitions and performances across campus, and numerous departments would have hosted their own events to celebrate the intellectual and creative work of their students. Unfortunately, the unprecedented events connected to the Coronavirus pandemic this year has meant that along with all other face-to-face events and classes at the university, we cannot hold this year’s Research and Creativity Day as we have in years past. But students and faculty have been working together throughout this year on their research and creative projects, and we want to take the time to share them and celebrate them. UMW Swimmer, Assistant Coach Win Big at Parapan American Games

SEPTEMBER 17, 2019 BY JILL LAIACONA Joey Peppersack ’21 and Zach Shattuck brought some shiny new souvenirs back to Mary Washington after competing in the Parapan American Games in August. Peppersack won a silver medal for the men’s 100-meter backstroke, while teammate Zach Shattuck, assistant coach of UMW’s men’s swimming, earned a silver and three bronze medals for the men’s 100-meter breaststroke, 50-meter butterfly, 200-meter individual medley and the men’s relay. UMW swim coach Justin Anderson ’10 served as head coach, leading Team USA to 62 swimming medals at the 2019 games in Lima, Peru. With 33 countries competing, the Parapan American Games is one of the largest events in U.S. Paralympic swimming, held every four years, one year prior to the Paralympic Games. “It was amazing going to these games as a more experienced swimmer and being placed in a leadership role,” said Shattuck, who served as Team USA’s men’s swimming captain. Theo Zotos wins James Harvey Dodd Award

Congratulations to Senior Theodosious Zotos on winning the James Harvey Dodd Award. The award is given to rising senior economics major who shows academic promise, is interested in graduate study in economics, and is eligible for financial aid. The recipient is chosen by the economics faculty. The funding for the award comes from a generous gift from an anonymous donor.(Prior to 1992, the recipient was a graduating senior economics major planning on attending graduate school in economics.) … [Read more...]

Seven Students Attend Economics Scholar Program at the Dallas Fed

Congrats to all our econ majors that just came back from Dallas, Texas! Seven students attended the Dallas Federal Undergraduate Research Conference. Three presented research, three attended the poster board session, and one attended as a discussant. There they were able to network with influential people at the Dallas FED in addition to meeting other students from all around the country.  They spent the entire day on Friday presenting and listening to presentations. Economic Conferences

Congratulations and good luck to economics students presenting their research at economic conferences this year. At the Eastern Economic Association Annual Conference in Boston, Theodosius Zotos will be presenting his paper, Is Macroeconomics Broken?, which is an analysis of the 2008 financial crisis. Christian Potter will be presenting his paper, The Economic Effects of a Nation Wide Cap and Trade Regulatory System. Parker Coon will also be presenting at the conference and Dr. Greenlaw will be the faculty advisor for the trip scheduled March 1, 2018. Allison Jakubek, Margaret Gallagher, Sarah Manugo, Christian Potter, Liam Missios, Zainab Imbabi, and Wyatt Priddy will be headed to Dallas this April.
