New Course-Offering ECON 490E- Independent Research

In this course, students will conduct independent faculty-supervised research on a topic of the student’s choice in economics. The topic needs to be approved by the instructor. It will generally be a research project that student has been working on from another course. Students are required to present their research on a public forum during the semester. UMW, Local Community Join Forces for Social Good Summit

UMW, Local Community Join Forces for Social Good Summit MARCH 27, 2019 BY JILL LAIACONA LEAVE A COMMENT The food bank needed help getting fresh produce to needy families. A literacy group sought tutors to help adults with reading, writing and basic math. A local high school wanted guest speakers to teach mindfulness and stress management techniques to teenagers. All of them congregated with more than 100 others in the Digital Auditorium of UMW’s Hurley Convergence Center last Friday for FRED – A Social Good Summit. Together they began a dialogue about how to collaborate more effectively to promote social change in the Fredericksburg area. The UMW student-planned event gave students and educators from the University of Mary Washington, Germanna Community College and area high schools the opportunity to meet with community partners from local nonprofits and other organizations that serve the public. Rycroft Wins Independent Publisher Book Award

Congratulations Dr. Rycroft! UMW Economics Professor Robert S. Rycroft has won a 2018 Independent Publisher Book Award for The American Middle Class: An Economic Encyclopedia of Progress and Poverty. The two-set encyclopedia released last May was awarded a bronze medal in the reference category. “I wanted to address the wide range of issues that have influenced, currently influence and will influence the way the middle class see the world,” Rycroft said of his winning book. Those issues include economics, labor, education, housing, politics, public policy, health, crime, norms and culture. Robert S.
