New General Education Requirements for BA/BS Students

The new General Education Program will be in effect starting in Fall 2020 for all new first-year and transfer students. Current students will have an opportunity to move to this program and are encouraged to review the FAQ developed for this purpose in anticipation of their spring advising appointment. CEE Stock Market Game Region Fall 2019 Results

The University of Mary Washington Center of Economic Education participates in the Stock Market Game through Virginia Counsel of Economic Education. The SMG is an online simulation of the real-life stock market that helps sharpen skills in math, social studies and language arts. It is a comprehensive economics and personal finance education program for Grades 4 to 12.  Small student teams compete for awards by investing $100,000 in an online, virtual portfolio.  The adult advisor registers the student teams. Student teams are provided online access to their own online investment portfolio.  Students research and apply their investment ideas in a real-world market environment.   Congratulations to the UMW Center of Economic Education top 3 region winners for the Fall 2019 Stock Market Game. New Course-Offering ECON 490E- Independent Research

In this course, students will conduct independent faculty-supervised research on a topic of the student’s choice in economics. The topic needs to be approved by the instructor. It will generally be a research project that student has been working on from another course. Students are required to present their research on a public forum during the semester. UMW Swimmer, Assistant Coach Win Big at Parapan American Games

SEPTEMBER 17, 2019 BY JILL LAIACONA Joey Peppersack ’21 and Zach Shattuck brought some shiny new souvenirs back to Mary Washington after competing in the Parapan American Games in August. Peppersack won a silver medal for the men’s 100-meter backstroke, while teammate Zach Shattuck, assistant coach of UMW’s men’s swimming, earned a silver and three bronze medals for the men’s 100-meter breaststroke, 50-meter butterfly, 200-meter individual medley and the men’s relay. UMW swim coach Justin Anderson ’10 served as head coach, leading Team USA to 62 swimming medals at the 2019 games in Lima, Peru. With 33 countries competing, the Parapan American Games is one of the largest events in U.S. Paralympic swimming, held every four years, one year prior to the Paralympic Games. “It was amazing going to these games as a more experienced swimmer and being placed in a leadership role,” said Shattuck, who served as Team USA’s men’s swimming captain.
