Research & Internships
Research Opportunities at UMW Many of our majors pursue research during their time at UMW, either through undergraduate apprenticeships, independent study, or the Summer Science Institute. The University provides generous support for student research through competitive undergraduate research grants, and faculty have supported research through external funding. Every year, UMW chemistry students present their work at local, regional, and national conferences, and where appropriate collaborate as co-authors on peer-reviewed publications. Students interested in pursuing research should speak to individual faculty members to get information about the many projects they could be involved with.
Internship Opportunities Internships are available through external organizations, such as private industry, hospitals, government agencies and more. Click here to learn more about internships at UMW.
Noycr Program Our Noyce Program, DISCOVER, is funded through the National Science Foundation (NSF) Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship program, Track 1: Scholarships and Stipends, to support talented STEM undergraduate majors to become excellent STEM teachers in high-need school districts. This project aims to serve the national need by preparing high quality, effective secondary (grades 6–12) STEM teachers who will teach in high-need schools and address some of the barriers related to STEM education, particularly for students of color and low-income youth.
This program at UMW is led by Kyle Schultz, Melissa Wells, Alexis Rutt and Leanna Giancarlo. We also have partnered with Germanna Community College to provide another pathway to supporting these prospective STEM teachers through this prestigious scholarship.
