2014 Historical Archaeology Field School at St. Mary’s City

Historic St. Mary’s City (HSMC), in association with St. Mary’s College of Maryland, announces its 2014 field school in historical archaeology. The goal of this summer’s excavations is to better understand the yards and structures around the Calvert House. Built in the first decade of Maryland’s settlement by Leonard Calvert, the first Governor, it served as the statehouse of the Province until 1676. The program is an intensive, 10 week experience in Colonial archaeology. The first week includes lectures on history, archaeological methods and material culture studies. Students learn artifact identification by working with one of the best archaeological collections of Colonial material in the country.  During the following weeks, students participate in excavation, recording and analysis. Students have the rare opportunity to learn about and help sail the MARYLAND DOVE, a replica of a 17th‑century, square-rigged tobacco ship. NPI Landscape Preservation Seminars

From April 1-3, The National Preservation Institute will be holding two seminars in Fredericksburg, VA. The first seminar, Landscape Preservation: An Introduction, is an introduction to the basics of cultural landscapes, learn about designed, vernacular, and ethnographic landscapes, and historic sites. The second seminar, Landscape Preservation: Advance Tools for Managing Change, is an advanced landscape preservation seminar, explore the sometimes conflicting issues that direct the process of change and decision making for challenging landscapes. 2014 National Parks Transportation Scholars Program

The National Park Transportation Scholars Program is a unique year long National Parks program for transportation specialists. This program will allow transportation professionals, as well as master's and doctoral candidates in the fields of transportation, engineering, and planning, the opportunity to work with the Park Service  in developing transportation solutions to preserve their resources and enhance the visitor experience. Assignments start in late June and will last for twelve months afterward. Members of the scholar program will be reimbursed for travel expenditures and stipend  $50,000. 3rd Annual Preservati​on South Student Conference

The University of Kentucky Historic Preservation Graduate Organization is hosting the 3rd Annual Preservation South Conference. Preservation South is a student-run conference created to give historic preservation students and students in related fields an opportunity to present and learn from the research of their peers. Students and recent graduates from all over the nation who are interested in presenting are invited and encouraged to submit an abstract of their research.
