Gamma Theta Upsilon
The University of Mary Washington has been home to the Delta Mu Chapter of Gamma Theta Upsilon, the International Geographical Honor Society since 1971. The purpose of Gamma Theta Upsilon is to advance the status of geography both as an academic discipline and as a profession, and to recognize and encourage scholarship in the field. The requirements for admission to Gamma Theta Upsilon are 15 hours in geography, a 3.3 grade point average overall, and a 3.3 grade point average in geography courses. If you would like to know more about the international organization, please see the GTU web site.
Instead of having the Geography Club and Gamma Theta Upsilon planning separate events for the Geography Department, the Geography students at Mary Washington decided to focus on creating events for geography majors through a Geography Club, so that all students could be members. As a result, Gamma Theta Upsilon has taken on the role of the honor society for geography at University of Mary Washington. Members of Gamma Theta Upsilon become leaders within the Geography Club and the Geography Department. Additionally, the academic excellence of the members of Gamma Theta Upsilon is recognized at the Geography Department’s Spring Banquet and at graduation each year when the senior members wear Gamma Theta Upsilon’s distinctive honor cords with their graduation regalia. Each year, Gamma Theta Upsilon acts as a sponsor to many of the Geography Club’s events, such as Geography Awareness Week and the Geography Symposium.
