Here is an article written by Virginia Gerrish, an Historic Preservation major, on her trip to Paris this summer. Enjoy!   By the title of this article, one can rightly glean that I, MsVirginiaGal, did indeed go to Paris. I went as a student of the Preservation in Paris class, under Professor Andrea Livi Smith’s tutelage and guidance for the entire month of July. We were seven rag tag American innocents willingly throwing ourselves into a mix of other like-minded jet-setters (hah!). From the moment the plane bounced on the runway till wheels up for our return, we walked, danced, sang, photographed, gawked, ATE, drank (some), WALKED, shopped, learned, ATE, WALKED, wrote, traveled, sat on the metro, WALKED the metro lines, learned some more, went to many museums, WALKED, ATE, laughed, blogged, journelled, and did I mention I WALKED till my feet bled. From February 28-March 2, 2014, the Southern Garden History Society's 2014 Annual Meeting, “Preserving Our Coastal Garden Heritage: Camellia Culture & Rice Plantation,” will take place in Savannah, Georgia. Lectures and tours will include the gardens and homes within the Historic Savannah District and the Isle of Hope, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is located on the Skidaway River. Tours of plantations around Savannah will be conducted at Wormsloe and Lebanon. The Sunday Optional Tour will visit three rice plantations in Liberty County and be entertained by the McIntosh Shouters with traditional Geechee-Gullah ring shouts. The society offers scholarships to attend the annual meeting to bona fide students enrolled in college and university majors relevant to the mission and goals of the society. Are you interested in a hands-on study experience from the Foundation of the American Institute for Conservation? This is a unique opportunity to study and apply preventive conservation techniques in a historic house on a wilderness barrier island off the coast of Savannah, Georgia.
