Graduate Study

Our majors go on to graduate programs in literature, creative writing, linguistics, technical and professional writing, law, public relations, publishing and editing, journalism, education, film studies, library science, gender studies, teaching English as a second language, speech language pathology, business, and more.

Planning for Graduate Study

If you are considering graduate study, talk with your academic advisor about how to prepare. The English and Linguistics Department sponsors an annual session for majors considering graduate study, and the UMW Center for Career and Professional Development offers advice and programs on choosing your direction and applying.

As you research graduate programs that interest you, consider job prospects, degree requirements, and financial aid. Try using Handshake to contact UMW alums who have attended programs you are considering. As early as possible in the year you plan to apply, speak with UMW faculty who might serve as potential recommenders. Ask your academic advisor or recommenders for suggestions on your application essay or writing sample.
