New Student Advising
The Bachelor of Liberal Studies (BLS) office is committed to providing you with personalized guidance toward the completion of your degree. Ultimately, it is the student’s responsibility to ensure all degree requirements have been met. Follow these steps to ensure we can best assist you.
Accept Your Offer of Admission
Once admitted, visit your Admissions portal to accept your offer of admission via the BLS Response Form and make your enrollment deposit, if required. If you have not yet sent official transcripts to admit@umw.edu, be sure to do so. These are required in order for the Office of the Registrar to evaluate and award your transfer credit.
Make an Initial Advising Appointment
You must meet with your advisor before registering for fall and spring courses. The first advising appointment will provide you with an introduction to the BLS program. The areas discussed at this first meeting include transfer credit, degree requirements, your academic and personal goals, possible major programs of study, and how to register for classes. Use the link in your application portal to make an appointment. Be sure your student email address and NetID are set up before the appointment. If you have questions, contact the BLS Office at (540) 654-2050.
Enroll in the BLS Advising Course
Prior to your first semester of enrollment, you will be invited to join the BLS Advising course in Canvas, the University’s online learning platform. You are expected to read the information covered in the modules and are responsible for familiarizing yourself with all institutional processes leading to the completion of your degree.
Attend Transfer Orientation
Transfer Orientation is offered for incoming students. It is recommended that you attend this informational event. The table below will give you a rough estimate of when to expect orientation to be offered, but please refer to the UMW Orientation webpage for dates and registration.
