Mathur Receives Simpson Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching

The University of Mary Washington presented the Grellet C. Simpson Award for excellence in undergraduate teaching to Professor of English Maya Mathur at the general faculty meeting on August 16. This award, for which all full-time continuing faculty members are eligible. Simpson, UMW’s fourth president, is celebrated for his emphasis on academics and belief in the liberal arts tradition. Dr. Kyle Schultz, chair of the University Sabbaticals, Fellowships & Faculty Awards Committee, announced the award, noting: During the six years since earning associate professor rank, Dr. Mathur has created six new courses, including two popular First Year Seminars (FSEMs), tailored to the interests of 21st century students. Fallon Leads Student Research into Writing Systems and Database Development in UMW Summer Institute

Paul Fallon, Associate Professor of Linguistics, has led student research inventory and database of writing systems in UMW's first Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Summer Institute (AHSSSI). The event concludes with presentations of research results of their monthlong research projects. The event, beginning at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 15, in the Digital Auditorium of the Hurley Convergence Center, is open to the public. Vanessa Fickes ’22 Wins Prestigious Top-of-the-Class Award

Vanessa Fickes was one of two graduates honored by the University of Mary Washington with the Colgate W. Darden Jr. Award for earning the highest grade-point average (GPA) in the undergraduate program. The award was presented at the University’s 111th Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 7. Fickes completed her capstone project, “Christian Imagery in the Short Stories of Flannery O’Connor,” which earned her departmental honors, with Professor and Chair Gary Richard. Barrenchea Receives Research Fellowship

Antonio Barrenechea, Professor of English, was recently awarded the 2022-2023 Reese Fellowship in American Bibliography and History of the Book in the Americas, from the Bancroft Library, University of California at Berkeley. His project "One Hemisphere Many Nations: Boltonian Americanism and Literary Historiography" will explore the Herbert Bolton archive in relation to the emergence of literary pan-Americanism in the lead up to World War II.
