Elisabeth, Katie, and Taryn at Gratitude with a Literary Attitude, a faculty-student celebration

The Department of English and Linguistics is the home of several student-run clubs and UMW’s undergraduate journal of creative writing and art, Aubade.

The English Club

The UMW English Club brings together students who share a love of literature, creating a welcoming space for English majors and all who enjoy the written word. Through creative programming, interactive activities, and engaging events, we build community, foster connections with faculty and peers, and help students explore ways to thrive both academically and beyond graduation. The English Club also supports the planning and execution of the department’s Thursday Poetry and Prose series. You can keep up with our activities by following us on Instagram!

The Linguistics Club

UMW Linguistics Club fosters leadership development through educational and awareness projects that explore how linguistics and language impact our daily lives. We coordinate meetings where officers and members discuss language’s role in society while providing tutoring assistance for students in linguistics and language courses. Our programming helps students recognize and appreciate the linguistic diversity and complexity that surrounds us while building community within the linguistics department. The club sponsors field trips and guest speakers. You can keep up with our activities by following us on Instagram!

Aubade

Students from many majors on campus collaborate on Aubade, which offers students a chance to place their creative works in a semi-annual or annual publication. Whether you’re interested in submitting or in getting involved on the staff, you can learn more about Aubade on their site.

UMW Fine Print

Members of Fine Print on a field trip!

Fine Print is a club for writers and writing admirers, no matter what their major! Our mission is to make a place for the writing community of Mary Washington to come together to appreciate the works of writers who are still with us or came before us. Fine Print hosts regular events including Litjams (open mic nights), writing workshops, and literary discussions that inspire creativity and foster connections among aspiring writers.  We also have enjoyed club field trips including the Poe Museum in Richmond, the Shakespeare Folger Library in D.C., and Planet Word in D.C.
