Classics, Philosophy, & Religious Studies

Please note that by policy students must apply for virtually all scholarships (except where indicated below) through the university’s scholarship portal.  As of this writing, the portal is scheduled to open February 1; the department’s scholarship committee will begin reviewing applications on March 1.  Fuller descriptions of the application process and minimal requirements are available there.

Van Sant Scholarship	approx. $1500	Awarded to an outstanding rising senior in any of the disciplines of Classics, Philosophy, or Religious Studies.  Documented financial need is a consideration.  Previous winners have shown accomplishment in two or more disciplines at once. John C. and Jerri Barden Perkins ’61 Classics, Philosophy, and Religion Research Endowment	approx. $1000	Awarded to a student to conduct on-site research or facilitate the loan or acquisition of objects to bring to campus.	April 1	April 15

Classics

John D. Mac Isaac Scholarship in Classics	approximately $1000	Awarded to rising junior or senior majoring in Classics or Art History with special consideration for a senior and for a student preparing for a career in classical archaeology through courses in ancient Greek and/or Latin, archaeology and classical civilization, the history of ancient art, and ancient history.  Selection based on merit; may be renewed.	April 1	April 15
National Latin Exam Scholarship	$1000	Awarded to rising sophomore or junior who takes upper level Latin and shows serious interest in continuing in the profession either as a teacher or with graduate study.  Award lasts one year; not usually repeated.	April 1	April 15
Laura V. Sumner Scholarship	approx. $4700	Awarded to the rising junior or senior Classics major who has performed best in his or her undergraduate Classics major.  Very often this student has studied Latin and/or Greek (or both) at the upper level and impressed the whole Classics faculty in coursework.  Award lasts one year; not usually repeated. Barbara Leigh Gregg Award for Excellence in Greek	book and eternal glory (άφθιτὀν κλέος)	Awarded each year to the graduating student who is, in the eyes of the Classics faculty, the best Hellenist of her or his graduating class.	April 1	upon graduation
Laura V. Sumner Award for Excellence in Classics	approx. $300	Awarded to a graduating Classics major who has performed with distinction in major coursework.  Very often this student has earned departmental honors and has studied Greek and/or Latin (or both) at the upper level.	N/A	upon graduation
Outstanding Graduate in Classics	Jefferson cup and eternal glory	Awarded each year to the outstanding graduate in Classics	N/A	upon graduation

Philosophy
