Prizes for English and Linguistics Students

The Department of English and Linguistics awards several prizes each academic year.

Awards for the Outstanding Majors in English and in English: Creative Writing are made to the students completing their degrees in December or May of a given academic year who have earned the highest GPAs in their respective majors.

The Carlton R. Lutterbie Outstanding Senior Service Award to the Department of English and Linguistics is chosen by the department’s faculty and typically announced at the reception for graduating seniors each spring.  Congratulations to our prior winners!

In Creative Writing, submissions by students in English & Linguistics are assessed each year by an esteemed outside judge for the Academy of American Poets Prize, made possible by a generous permanent endowment by the Poetry Society of Virginia. Information on this prize, including a list of former judges and prior winners, is here.
