Fall Internship with Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park

Position Title: Archival and Curatorial Assistant Intern

Background: The Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park (FRSP) includes a variety of historical documents. These documents represent the park’s history dating back to the 1930’s. They provide insight into past plans and practices that directly affect current resource management projects. The documents are improperly stored and at varying levels of decay. This project will preserve and protect the original documents and provide proper storage. It will also allow for these documents to be easily shared and readily accessible by all staff.

In addition, FRSP includes a museum collection of artifacts related to the American Civil War battles in Fredericksburg, VA, and surrounding counties. Over the past 50 years, FRSP’s museum collection has outgrown its current space and the conditions are no longer appropriate for safe object storage. FRSP is creating a new space by rehabilitating a 1930’s War Department building and outfitting it with brand new cabinets and compact-mobile open shelving.

Description: The intern will inventory, copy, and file the historical documents (approximately 2,000), which include blue prints, maps, and other written works. The intern will take the documents to a predetermined blueprint services company for digitization and copying. Upon completion the digitized copies will be put on the network drive for park access.

For the curatorial project, the intern will assist with the collection move, a massive relocation of all artifacts from a basement storage room to a new facility. This move is tentatively scheduled for October 2015. The intern may also be asked to assist with a variety of other collections management related tasks such as accessioning, cataloging, environmental monitoring, and transcribing.

The historical documents are currently stored at the Maintenance Facility and the intern will be working there and at museum collections storage. Upon selection the intern can begin immediately working a minimum of 20 hours/ per week.
