Fall Internship with the National Park Service (Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park)

August 18, 2014 by Cristina Turdean Leave a Comment

Position Title: Curatorial Assistant Intern

Background: The Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park (FRSP) includes a museum collection of artifacts related to the American Civil War battles in Fredericksburg, VA, and surrounding counties. Over the past 50 years, FRSP’s museum collection has outgrown its current space and the conditions are no longer appropriate for safe object storage. FRSP is creating a new space by rehabilitating a 1930’s War Department building and outfitting it with brand new cabinets and compact-mobile open shelving. In October 2014, FRSP will relocate the museum collection and needs assistance.

Description: First, the intern will inventory and photograph ALL artifacts in storage (approximately 4,600 artifacts; inventory sheet and camera will be provided). During this time, the intern may be asked to assist with other projects such as environmental monitoring and research inquiries. Next, the intern will assist with packing artifacts to be relocated and organizing artifacts in the new storage facility. Finally, the intern will assist with database updates to artifact condition and location. The intern will work at the Chancellorsville Battlefield Visitor Center and can ideally begin ASAP working 20 hours/week.

Application Deadline: August 27th (or until the position has been filled)
