History

Debate at Mary Washington College has a long and storied history that can be traced to the literary societies that appeared shortly after the College’s founding in 1908. In the near future this section of the website will be expanded as we dig through the archives to discover our history. Below are a few pictures found in the Battlefield.

The Original Dixie Classic Debate Tournament?

Debating at the Dixie Warm-up Tournament – The Dixie Novice Tournament was held on the Mary Washington campus in December 1947. Wake Forest hosted its first tournament in 1951 while the now better known Dixie Classic tournment started in 1956
