Programs

The Computer Science department offers two major programs, both of which lead to a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, and three minors:

Two Major Programs

Computer Science

This is a very popular major—currently, it is the third most popular major at UMW. This program prepares students for the in-demand field of software development. Nearly all of our students have multiple job offers upon graduating.

Cybersecurity

Prepares students to go into the rapidly growing field of cybersecurity. You will learn how to find and fix the vulnerabilities in computer systems that cyber attackers exploit.

Three Minor Programs

Computer Science

It provides students with an excellent foundation in computer science while allowing them to explore special topics of interest. The minor builds strong programming and problem-solving skills and is particularly useful when combined with a major.

Cybersecurity

Focuses on the field of information security, which deals with the processes and methodologies that are designed and implemented to protect data from unauthorized access, misuse, modification, and disruption

Data Science

It provides students with principles and skills in the science of how and why we use data. The minor focuses on gathering and manipulating large volumes of data, gaining critical insights from data, understanding data via simulations, and optimizing decisions.

Each program is tailor-made for a challenging and practical course of study and paves the way for a dynamic career path and advanced study. Students have opportunities for individual study, undergraduate research, and internships at technical firms, government offices, or software development agencies.
