Student Opportunities
Student interns and monitors play a vital role in the operation of the UMW Galleries. They are important to both the day to day administration of the Galleries as well as the accomplishment of long-term projects.
Internships

An internship with the UMW Galleries provides students with hands-on experience in museum collections management, exhibition design, and gallery administration. Each semester the Galleries employ 4-5 interns who want to pursue careers and gain expertise in the fields of Art, Art History, Historic Preservation, History, and Museum Studies.
Interns participate in many diverse projects under the direction of Gallery Staff. Some activities include: digitizing and photographing the collection for our online database, updating collections storage facilities with archival quality materials, installing and de-installing exhibitions, providing tours to visiting groups, and much more.
Internships are open to UMW students and are available for 2 or 3 credits.
If you would like to apply for an internship, information will be posted on our social media when it is application time.
Monitor Positions
Our monitors are the face of the Gallery and serve as the first introduction visitors have with the exhibition. Monitors are responsible for a variety of activities including greeting visitors and supervising the front desk, answering questions for patrons, working during gallery receptions and theatre events, and monitoring the artwork in the gallery.
Monitor positions are available for UMW students in the Fall and Spring semesters. Monitors typically work 6-8 hours per week during gallery hours (Wed thru Sun 10am-4pm) and some evenings.
