Our mission is to develop physics graduates who care deeply about science. Through hands-on learning opportunities in a variety of contexts, the goal of the faculty is to make physics accessible to all students. Because physics impacts everything and everyone we aim to be inclusive and representative in all we do. Our faculty practice science and we welcome students to participate as co-learners, where making mistakes is essential. Because physics is found in every discipline, UMW physics graduates can affect the world in positive and unique ways.

Mary Wash offers both an Applied Physics major for those who want more career flexibility and a traditional Physics major for those planning on graduate school.  Not only do physics majors go onto diverse jobs in engineering, medicine, and computer technology, but they also can be found in business, law, and education.
