Laura Sipe is an interdisciplinary cancer biologist. She completed her doctorate in biology at the University of Virginia. As a post-doctoral scholar at University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Dr. Sipe investigated the how metabolism and diet impact breast cancer progression and the ability of cancer to evade destruction by the immune system. Now at UMW, Dr. Sipe integrates the fields of cancer, immunology, and metabolism, to change the way cancer cells die. Students in the Sipe laboratory have investigated (1) how starving cancer cells promotes an immunogenic cell death and (2) genetic variants that promote tumor associated antigen processing in response to an immunogenic cell death. The findings of these studies are important in improving anti-tumor immune response and reducing recurrence in triple negative breast cancer.
