Introduction

As is the case at most colleges and universities, premedicine at the University of Mary Washington is not an academic major. Rather, premedicine is a specialized pre-career program specifically designed to prepare students for traditional schools of medicine and for schools of osteopathic medicine.  The program is comprised of specific course requirements, clinical requirements, elective extracurricular activities and optional research work that students must complete as part of their overall undergraduate curriculum.  The program also features advising and recommendation services that provide students with the guidance and support needed for medical school application submission.  The UMW Premedical Program is NOT affiliated with any particular academic department at UMW.

As a UMW student, the only things you need to do to be a premedical student are add your name to the program census, attend the mandatory meetings called by the PreHealth advisor, and actively engage in the premedical curriculum.  You must also be familiar with the program details, which can be found by clicking on the links listed below.

Professor Deborah O’Dell, Ph. D., Professor of Biology, is the UMW PreHealth Advisor.  As a UMW student, you should contact her for advice related to the program and consult her about all issues related to your preparation for medical school.
