Postbaccalaureate Premedical Programs
A number of schools offer postbaccalaureate premedical programs. These programs assist individuals to pursue a medical career after they have already received a Bachelor’s degree.
The purposes of these programs vary. Persons wishing to change careers can obtain specific prequisites with these program. These individuals have not completed the science courses required for medical school application during their baccalaureate. Other programs are designed for persons wishing to enhance an existing academic record. These students have taken the requisite courses. The programs help improve their GPAs to increase the competitiveness of their medical school applications. Other programs are specifically designed to assist persons from specific groups currently underrepresented in medicine. Some help persons from educationally or economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
In addition to academics, many of these programs also include MCAT preparation and the ability to obtain clinical experience. Some programs have affiliations with medical schools such that pathways for student acceptance at these schools exist.
