Over 1.3 billion people worldwide speak one of the dialects of Chinese, and the language is becoming increasingly important in the international context in concert with China’s emergence as an important global economic and political force.

Mandarin Chinese, the dialect spoken in the Beijing region, is also the mainland’s standard language in print and television media. Students pursuing courses in Chinese can also take related courses in Art, History, Political Science, and Religion, and complete the Asian Studies Minor.
