I then went on to attend George Mason University for my Master of Social Work with a Clinical Specialization Degree and will be graduating in May 2018.<\/p><p>I am passionate about working with children with anxiety and behavior issues and am expanding my knowledge and clinical skills in Play and Family Therapy under the supervision of Cathy Canfield, LCSW for my Clinical Placement. I also have experience providing in-home based case management services to the elderly on Medicaid in Washington, D.C. I am currently working as a school based clinician for the outpatient mental health clinic operated by The Children’s Guild. This organization is located in Maryland and operates in several schools across multiple counties in the state to place clinicians in identified schools that have a high need for mental health servicing. The school I am based in is a combined elementary and middle school so I am able to work with a wide range of ages and presenting problems. I carry a caseload of 21 clients and I conduct individual, family, and group therapy with students ranging from 5-15 years old. I also teach social skills lessons in elementary classrooms to help foster a community culture in the school of pro-social and emotionally aware behavior. Other duties include writing regular treatment notes and treatment plan reviews, participating in special education meetings, and crisis intervention as needed. I have been in this role for a year, and as a benefit of the position my school is also paying for my full play therapy certification so I will be a registered play therapist by the end of next year.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>I would be happy to answer any questions that current students have about this career or other career options in the field of clinical social work. I am pursuing a clinical placement with the hopes of eventually becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I was also recently approved to receive the certificate in Gender Violence Intervention upon graduation. While in school, I currently work at an emergency shelter which serves survivors of intimate partner and sexual violence. I provide services such as case management, emotional support, and safety planning to residents of the shelter. I have also completed an internship providing hospital accompaniment to survivors of violence. I provide similar resources to clients during these interactions, but my relationship with them and allotted time to build rapport is much shorter.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>I would be happy to speak to students about school, work, or this internship. After graduating from UMW, I worked in a child care facility for a year and then received my masters in teaching (K-6) in 2013 from East Carolina University. I am currently a kindergarten teacher for the Wake County Public School System in Raleigh, NC. The knowledge, experiences, and overall background I gained from being a psych major at UMW have been so helpful in this job and I am able to apply them daily in so many ways, many of which I never would have expected. Having an understanding of developmental psychology and the associated behavioral\/cognitive processes helps me with planning instruction for my students according to their unique personalities\/learning styles\/needs, and I also rely on it when it comes to behavior management in the classroom. In addition, so much of teaching (especially now) is about data – collecting data, analyzing data, and applying data analysis to planning interventions and adapting instruction.
