{"id":1101,"date":"2012-02-26T15:33:11","date_gmt":"2012-02-26T15:33:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cas.umw.edu\/psychology\/?page_id=1101"},"modified":"2026-02-26T08:26:15","modified_gmt":"2026-02-26T13:26:15","slug":"necc","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/cas.umw.edu\/psychology\/for-students\/experiential-learning\/necc\/","title":{"rendered":"NECC"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<section class=\"wp-block-umw-hero alignfull umw-custom-block umw-hero umw-hero--dark-text umw-hero--media-float-right umw-hero--white umw-hero--with-no-media\"><div class=\"umw-hero__inner\"><div class=\"umw-hero__media\"><\/div><div class=\"umw-hero__title\"><div class=\"container\"><div class=\"umw-hero__title__wrapper\"><div class=\"umw-hero__eyebrow\">psychological science<\/div><h1 class=\"umw-hero__title__header\">NECC and UMW Cooperative Learning Program<\/h1><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-umw-hero-ctas alignfull\"><div class=\"umw-hero__links\"><div class=\"container\"><div class=\"umw-hero__links__wrapper\">\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-about-the-new-england-center-for-children\">About The New England Center for Children<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Since its founding in 1975, The New England Center for Children (NECC) has remained true to its original mission: providing state-of-the-art education and individualized treatment\u2014with care and respect\u2014for children with autism and other disabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a private, nonprofit corporation, our commitment extends to creating a positive, professional environment for our staff so that they can work cooperatively toward achieving NECC\u2019s goals.&nbsp; We strive to be at the forefront of conducting and publishing research to further the understanding and treatment of autism and related disabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-about-the-cooperative-learning-program\">About the Cooperative Learning Program<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The program includes both didactic coursework and supervised practicum experiences.&nbsp; Trainees will learn theoretical and practical applications of behavior analysis techniques, and how to develop educational curriculum and behavior management programs for students who have a range of needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trainees will attend two courses offered on-site by Northeastern University and Simmons College.&nbsp; These courses will count as electives within the psychological science&nbsp;department at&nbsp;UMW. Trainees will also spend about 30 hours each week gaining hands-on experience as student teachers. This experience will result in six internship credits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students will enroll at UMW and pay for full-time tuition and fees (in-state or out-of-state as appropriate), as well as the current cost of double occupancy housing. &nbsp;NECC will provide housing in close proximity to the Center; the student is responsible for the cost of their own food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-are-the-prerequisites\">What are the prerequisites?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Must meet all the UMW internship requirements<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Must be a degree-seeking student at UMW<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Must have completed at least 12 credit hours at UMW (at the time of enrollment in the NECC program)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Must have a GPA of at least 2.0 (at the beginning of the semester in which you\u2019ll be at NECC<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Must have junior standing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Must have completed at least 12 credits in psychology beyond PSYC 100 \u2013 General Psychology (by the start of the semester in which you\u2019ll be at NECC)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Must have taken the following <strong>required<\/strong> courses (before beginning your semester at NECC)\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>PSYC 231 \u2013 Infant and Child Development or PSYC 232 \u2013 Adolescent and Emerging Adult Development<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PSYC 253 \u2013 Fundamentals of Learning and Motivation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students are<strong> recommended<\/strong> to have also taken either PSYC 211 \u2013 Psychopathology or 320 \u2013 Psychology of Exceptional Children and Youth<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-participate\">Why participate?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Gain valuable work experience working with children with autism, under the supervision of a faculty mentor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Receive full semester academic credit (12 credits) from UMW.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Receive a waiver for some graduate program requirements if you work at NECC in the future.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Trainees will receive special consideration for employment at NECC upon graduation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-can-i-get-more-information\">How can I get more information?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Interested students should consult with the chair of the Department of Psychological Science, Dr. Miriam Liss (<a href=\"mailto:mliss@umw.edu\">mliss@umw.edu<\/a>), or the faculty supervisor of the UMW-NECC collaboration, Dr. W.
